Building the best schooling network in the country
One of National’s priorities is rebuilding Christchurch, so we’re investing $1 billion over the next 10 years into the education sector.
We’ve looked at all the schools across greater Christchurch to see what we can do better. There were already about 5,000 places available in greater Christchurch schools before the earthquakes, there are now 9,300.
We have listened to parents and schools and have decided we should not proceed with about a third of the original proposals. We’ve announced interim decisions for 31 schools – 12 schools proposed for closure or merger should now remain open, and 19 should close or merge.
We are also building or rebuilding fifteen schools over the next 10 years - five of which are brand-new schools. National is working to give Christchurch one of the most modern schooling networks in the country, one that will help every child get a great education.
