New tools to combat welfare fraud
National promised to clamp down on welfare fraud – and we are delivering on that promise with three new initiatives to prevent, detect, and catch those ripping off the welfare system. This contributes to our priority to deliver better public services to New Zealanders.
A vast majority of beneficiaries are honest and do the right thing, but a small minority take advantage. In 2011/12, fraud worth $23.4 million was recovered following 714 convictions. Welfare fraud is a crime that is costing New Zealand taxpayers a lot of money.
Let’s be clear – welfare fraud is a crime, committed by criminals, for their own benefit at the taxpayer’s expense, and we treat it as such.
